"In the same year (2000) we were invited to the first International Conference on Science and Technology of the Steelpan (ICSTS 2000) in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, where we presented our instruments and our research results. “It sounds like in the old days,” was the reaction of the Trinidad scholars. This statement was a confirmation of our work because it really was the sound of the old steel bands that had inspired us."
This forum was the main discussion platform for Hang players on the Internet from 2006 to 2009. As it had shifted its focus away from hang to exchanges about handpans in general during 2009, it was closed in the fall of 2009 and reopened under the title HandPan.org - The place for HandPan players. Large portions of the forum content have been archived at web.archive.org.

A letter from Dr. Achong (PDF) (Engl.) / (German), published by PANArt on Facebook on 9/4/2020 as an expert opinion, states that every external shape is imaginable and that the lens shape is an aesthetic decision.
„In the method the steel sheet with a thickness of 0.75 to 1.25 mm required for the production is nitrided until the sheet is completely permeated with iron nitride needles. The linear density of the needles is, as a rule, between 401010.sup.3 m.sup.-1 to 8010.sup.3 m.sup.“

"(...)At the time, no one recognized what this was to mean, and no one could play it, either. However, this gave us, the Hangmakers, a unique possibility to make further progress in the art of tuning metal. Our understanding of the physics of various musical instruments of the world now flowed into this new thing. A new musical dimension was now opened for human hands, and this new thing was named the Hang, which signifies hand in the dialect of Bern. (...)"
