2004 - PANArt’s conflict with the word “drum”
Last Updated on 11. December 2021
Description: The PANArt Drum-dilemma is a quite big topic to be studied . Here are some sources and quotes for a start.
- Similar instruments from other manufacturers appear in the following years, esp after 2004.
Quote PANArt: „In Germany it was called UFO, in Italy it became the Disco Armonico, in the U.S.A. the Hang Drum or Spacedrum, in Israel the Pantam. (…) PANArt let the new names stand except for those that contained the word drum.“

- “Spacedrum” is till today (2021) calling itself SpaceDRUM and also labels the instrument as percussion instrument. „For almost 25 years, Philippe Maignot has been engaged in the mechanized manufacture of steel drums, in addition to the traditional manufacture of ‚pans‘.“ (translated) Source: https://metalsounds-shop.com/de/content/6-die-herstellung
As far as known spacedrum did not hear any complaints about “drum”.
- Regarding the term “Steel – Drum” vs “Steel-Pan” there is an old article in “Panyard” Magazine (A PANArt Publication): https://web.archive.org/web/20140822081656/http://www.panyard.pan-jumbie.com/2/steelpan.html
- “The steelpan was originally made from a steel drum. The steel drum is still currently used by some tuners.” Source: Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards -> Terms and definitions 2.1.1 steelpan – Note http://kalipa.gottbs.com/embed_gen/index.php?doc=2019-04-23-82874TTS%20412-2015%20Standard%20for%20Steelpan.pdf
